Ayushya Suktam

आयुष्य सूक्तम्
Also known as: Ayushya Sukta, Long Life Hymn, Life Span Hymn
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Ayushya Suktam is a Vedic hymn primarily found in the Atharvaveda (Śaunaka recension, Kāṇḍa 19, Sūkta 67-69) and also referenced in the Yajurveda (Taittirīya Brāhmaṇa 2.5.5). It is a powerful invocation for longevity (āyuṣya), vitality, and protection of life. The hymn consists of several ṛcas (verses) that call upon various deities—Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Prajapati, Indra, Varuna, and others—to bestow long life, health, and freedom from disease. According to the Atharvaveda 19.67.1, the opening verse prays: "Ayushyam Indradadatu ayushyam Varunah, ayushyam Suryah..." (May Indra grant long life, may Varuna grant long life, may Surya grant long life).

The beej-akshara (seed syllable) analysis reveals that the hymn emphasizes the sound "āyuḥ" (life) and uses phonemes that resonate with the life force (prāṇa). The traditional purpose of the Ayushya Suktam is to extend one's lifespan, enhance vitality, and ward off premature death. It is commonly chanted during Ayushya Homa (a fire ritual for longevity), on birthdays, and during Navagraha Shanti ceremonies to pacify malefic planetary influences. The recommended chanting context includes recitation at dawn or during auspicious times (muhūrta), with a minimum of 108 repetitions using a japa mala.

Ritual setting often involves offerings of ghee, grains, and medicinal herbs into the sacred fire. Cautions: The hymn should be chanted with proper pronunciation and intention, as per the Atharvaveda tradition; it is advised to receive the mantra from a qualified guru. The Yajurveda (Taittirīya Brāhmaṇa 2.5.5) also prescribes this sukta for those seeking long life and progeny. The hymn's attributes—longevity, life protection, vitality, health, and life span extension—are deeply rooted in Vedic cosmology, where the sun and moon are seen as regulators of time and life.

The Ayushya Suktam remains a cornerstone of Vedic longevity rituals across India.
