Chandra

चन्द्र
Also known as: Soma

Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Chandra Gayatri mantra is a Vedic invocation dedicated to the lunar deity Chandra, also known as Soma. This mantra is derived from the broader tradition of Gayatri mantras, which are meditative verses addressed to various deities. While the classic Gayatri mantra from the Rigveda (3.62.10) is addressed to Savitr, the Chandra Gayatri is a later adaptation found in Puranic and Tantric texts, such as the Mantra Mahodadhi (a 16th-century compilation of mantras). The mantra is: 'Om Somaya Vidmahe Mrinalaya Dhimahi Tanno Chandra Prachodayat.' This translates to: 'Om, let us meditate on Soma (Chandra), the one with a lotus-like form; may that Chandra inspire and illuminate our minds.'

The beej-akshara (seed syllable) 'Sām' or 'Som' is inherent in the name Soma, which is associated with the lunar energy. The phoneme 'Sa' relates to the element of water and the cooling, nurturing aspect of the moon. According to the Shaktisangama Tantra, Chandra governs the mind (manas) and the water element (apas), making this mantra effective for calming mental turbulence and enhancing emotional stability.

Traditional purposes of chanting the Chandra Gayatri include attaining mental peace, removing nightmares, and improving intuitive abilities. The moon is considered the ruler of the mind in Vedic astrology (Jyotisha), and propitiating Chandra through this mantra is believed to balance the lunar influence in one's birth chart, alleviating mental stress and fostering clarity. The Devi Mahatmya (also known as Durga Saptashati) indirectly references the moon's association with the mind, as the goddess is said to reside in the lunar sphere (Chandramandala) and bestow tranquility.

Recommended chanting context: This mantra is ideally recited on Mondays (Somavar), which is dedicated to Chandra, or during the waxing moon phase (Shukla Paksha) for growth and positivity. A traditional count is 108 repetitions (one mala) daily, preferably in the early morning or evening facing east or north. The ritual setting may include a white cloth, white flowers (especially jasmine or white lotus), and offerings of rice and milk. Cautions: Those with a weak or afflicted moon in their horoscope should chant with proper guidance, as excessive lunar energy can cause emotional sensitivity. According to the Mantra-Yoga-Samhita, the mantra should not be chanted during lunar eclipses without purification rites. Overall, the Chandra Gayatri is a powerful tool for harmonizing the mind and connecting with the soothing, intuitive energy of the moon.
