Chandra Kavacham

चन्द्र कवचम्
Also known as: Soma Kavacham, Indu Kavacham
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Chandra Kavacham, also known as Soma Kavacham or Indu Kavacham, is a protective hymn dedicated to Chandra (the Moon god), revered in Hindu dharma as a bestower of mental peace, emotional stability, and relief from anxiety. This kavacham (armor) is traditionally found in the Brahmanda Purana, where it is presented as a shield against nightmares, mental disorders, and the malefic effects of the Moon in one's horoscope. The text describes Chandra as the son of Atri and Anasuya, and as the deity who presides over the mind (manas) and the water element. The mantra is composed of a series of bija (seed) syllables and invocations that form a protective aura around the chanter.

Key bija syllables include 'Om', 'Hrim', 'Shrim', and 'Klim', which are associated with the Moon's cooling and nourishing energy. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi, the Chandra Kavacham is especially effective when chanted on Mondays (Somavara) or during the lunar month of Kartika, and on Sharad Purnima (the full moon of autumn). The recommended count is 108 recitations daily for 40 days, ideally during the early morning or evening hours when the Moon is visible. The ritual setting includes facing north or east, wearing white clothing, and offering white flowers, sandalwood paste, and rice mixed with camphor to a lunar symbol.

The kavacham is believed to calm the mind, enhance creativity, and protect against negative influences from the lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu). Cautions include avoiding recitation during lunar eclipses or on Amavasya (new moon) unless under guidance, as the Moon's energy is considered weak at those times. The Soma Kavacham from Tantric texts, such as the Shaktisangama Tantra, adds additional bija mantras and visualizations, emphasizing the Moon's role in balancing the Ida and Pingala nadis. Overall, the Chandra Kavacham serves as a powerful tool for emotional healing and mental clarity, rooted in both Puranic and Tantric traditions.
