Dhanvantari Mantra

धन्वन्तरि मन्त्र
Also known as: Dhanvantari Gayatri, Ayurveda Mantra, Divine Healer Mantra

About

The Dhanvantari Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician and an incarnation of Vishnu. According to the Bhagavata Purana (8.8.28-33), Dhanvantari emerged from the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) bearing a pot of Amrita (nectar of immortality). He is revered as the celestial patron of Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine. The primary mantra, 'Om Namo Bhagavate Dhanvantaraye,' is a powerful healing chant that seeks the grace of Dhanvantari for physical well-being, disease removal, and longevity. The Dhanvantari Gayatri, 'Om Vasudevaya Vidmahe Dhanvantaraye Dhimahi Tanno Dhanvantari Prachodayat,' is also widely recited, as referenced in the Dhanvantari Purana. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) 'Dham' is associated with Dhanvantari, representing the sound of healing energy. Phonetically, the mantra's resonance is believed to activate the throat and heart chakras, promoting balance in the body's doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). Traditional purposes include curing chronic ailments, boosting immunity, and ensuring a long, healthy life. The Agni Purana (chapter 298) prescribes chanting this mantra 108 times daily, preferably at sunrise or during the auspicious period of Dhanteras. Ritual setting often involves offering medicinal herbs, ghee lamp, and chanting before a picture or idol of Dhanvantari. Cautions: This mantra should be chanted with pure intent and respect; it is not a substitute for medical treatment but a complementary spiritual practice. It is recommended to receive initiation (upadesha) from a qualified guru for deeper results, though general recitation for health is considered safe. The mantra is especially potent during Dhanvantari Jayanti and Dhanteras, when the deity's blessings are believed to be most accessible.
