Griha Shanti Mantra

गृह शान्ति मन्त्र
Also known as: Domestic Harmony Mantra, Vastu Shanti Mantra, Kutumba Sukha Mantra
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Griha Shanti Mantra is a collection of Vedic and Puranic invocations aimed at establishing peace, harmony, and prosperity within the household. Its textual origins are found in the Grihya Sutras (such as the Ashvalayana Grihya Sutra 1.7-8) and the Puranas, where domestic rituals for marital harmony and family well-being are prescribed. The mantra is associated with multiple deities: Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity; Vastu Purusha, the presiding deity of the dwelling; and Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. The central beej-akshara is 'Shreem' (श्रीं), the seed syllable of Lakshmi, which is often combined with 'Om' and 'Shanti' to invoke peace.

Phonetically, the repetition of 'Shanti' (शान्ति) three times—'Om Shanti Shanti Shanti'—calms the mind and neutralizes negative vibrations. According to the Vastu Shastra, chanting this mantra during Griha Pravesh (housewarming) aligns the dwelling with cosmic energies, removing vastu doshas (architectural defects). The Mantra Mahodadhi (9.45-48) mentions that reciting this mantra 108 times daily for 21 days brings domestic happiness and resolves conflicts. Traditional purposes include fostering mutual understanding between spouses, ensuring the well-being of children, and attracting abundance.

The recommended chanting context is early morning or evening, facing east or north, after a bath. A count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha or crystal mala is standard. Ritual settings may include lighting a ghee lamp, offering incense, and placing a small image of Lakshmi or a kalasha (sacred pot) filled with water and rice. Cautions: The mantra should not be chanted during periods of mourning or impurity (sutak).

It is advisable to maintain a clean and quiet space, and to avoid distractions. The Devi Mahatmya (Chapter 11) also associates such peace mantras with the protective aspect of the Divine Mother, ensuring the home is a sanctuary of sattva (purity).
