Nava Graha Dosh Nivarana Mantra

नव ग्रह दोष निवारण मन्त्र
Also known as: Planetary Protection Mantra, Graha Shanti Mantra, Navagraha Dosh Nivaran

About

The Nava Graha Dosh Nivarana Mantra is a powerful invocation aimed at pacifying the nine celestial bodies (Navagrahas) recognized in Hindu astrology. Its textual origins are found in various Jyotisha texts and the Navagraha Purana, which prescribe specific mantras for each graha as well as collective chants for overall planetary harmony. The mantra is addressed to the Navagrahas as a group, seeking to neutralize doshas (afflictions) arising from unfavorable planetary placements in one's birth chart. The nine planets include Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangala (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu (North Lunar Node), and Ketu (South Lunar Node). According to the Mantra Mahodadhi, each graha has a distinct beej-akshara (seed syllable) — for example, 'Hraam' for Surya, 'Hreem' for Chandra, etc. — but in this collective mantra, the combined energy of all nine is invoked. The phonetics of the mantra are designed to resonate with the cosmic frequencies of the planets, aligning the chanter's energy with the celestial order. Traditional purposes include relief from malefic influences such as Sade Sati (Saturn's transit), Mangal Dosha (Mars affliction), and Rahu-Ketu disturbances, as well as promoting general well-being, success, and spiritual progress. The Devi Mahatmya and other Puranas emphasize that planetary afflictions are karmic in nature, and chanting this mantra with devotion can mitigate their negative effects. Recommended chanting context: ideally at dawn or dusk, facing east, after bathing and wearing clean clothes. A count of 108 repetitions (one mala) is standard, performed on a rudraksha or crystal mala. The ritual setting may include a small altar with images or yantras of the Navagrahas, offerings of flowers, incense, and lamps. Cautions: this mantra should not be chanted without proper guidance if one is undergoing severe planetary periods, as it may intensify initial purification. It is best learned from a qualified guru and chanted with clear intention and reverence. The Lalita Sahasranama also alludes to the supreme goddess controlling the grahas, reminding practitioners that ultimate protection comes from the divine will.
