Vayu Vidya Mantra

वायु विद्या मन्त्र
Also known as: Vayu Vidya, Chandogya Upanishad, Prana Vidya

About

The Vayu Vidya Mantra is a set of teachings and mantras from the Chandogya Upanishad (specifically chapters 1.2, 1.3, and 1.6) that expound the nature of prana (life force) as the supreme principle. The Chandogya Upanishad, part of the Sama Veda, presents a dialogue where the sage Pravahana Jaivali instructs on the five fires and the path of the gods, but the Vayu Vidya specifically focuses on the identity of prana with Vayu, the cosmic wind. According to Chandogya Upanishad 1.2.1, 'Prana is the oldest and the greatest' (prāṇo jyeṣṭhaś ca śreṣṭhaś ca), and it is through prana that all other faculties function. The mantra often begins with the beej-akshara 'Om' and includes phrases like 'Om vāyuḥ prāṇaḥ' (Om, Vayu is prana). The phoneme 'vā' in Vayu represents the expansive nature of air, while 'prā' in prana denotes the forward-moving life force. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to realize the unity of the individual life force with the cosmic wind, leading to mastery over the senses and the attainment of longevity and vitality. The Chandogya Upanishad 1.3.3 states, 'When prana departs, the other faculties follow,' emphasizing its supremacy. The mantra is chanted for health, energy, and spiritual understanding. Recommended chanting context includes early morning, facing east, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha mala. It is often recited before pranayama practices. According to the Mantra-Yoga-Samhita, such vidya mantras should be chanted with proper breath control (pranayama) and concentration on the heart center. Cautions: This mantra should be learned from a qualified guru, as incorrect pronunciation or visualization may lead to energetic imbalances. It is not recommended for those with severe respiratory conditions without guidance.
