விவசாயத்தை பாதுகாக்கும் காவல் தெய்வமாக விளங்கிய காளியம்மன், விவசாயி கனவில் தோன்றி, தான் இங்கு உள்ள புளியமரத்தில் குடி கொண்டுள்ளதாகவும், கோயில் கட்ட சொல்லியுள்ளார். அப்பகுதியினர் மறுத்து, புளிய மரத்தை வெட்டிய போது மரத்தில் இருந்து ரத்தம் வடிந்துள்ளது. அதன்பின் மரத்தை எடுத்துச் சென்று ஒரு இடத்தில் அடுக்கினர். அப்போது அந்த மரம் தளிர் விட்டு மரமாகியது. அதன் பின் அப்பகுதியினர் அச்சமடைந்து படையல் நடத்தினர். அப்போது ஒருபெண் மூலம் அருள் வாக்காக காளியம்மன் தோன்றி தான் விவசாயத்தை பாதுகாப்பதாகவும், தனக்கு கோயில் கட்டி, விழா நடத்தினால் நோய் நொடிகளை தீர்த்து, சுகம் அளிப்பதுடன், திருமணத்தடை மற்றும் புத்திர பாக்கியம் அளிப்பதாக கூறி மறைந்துள்ளார். அதன் பின் அப்பகுதியினர் வரி வசூல் செய்து கோயில் கட்டி பராமரித்து வருகின்றனர்.
