புராண இதிகாச காலங்களில் இருந்து துர்க்கா வழிபாடு போற்றப்படுகிறது. துர்க்கா என்றால் கோட்டை அரண் என்று பொருள். துர்க்கை அரண் போல் நின்று தீய குணங்கள் என்ற பகைவர்கள் நம் உள்ளத்தில் புகாமல் காப்பதால் பராசக்தியை துர்க்கை என்கிறோம். திண்டுக்கல் வேதாத்திரி நகரில் சிம்மத்தின் மீது அமர்ந்து தன் வலது பாதத்தை பத்மத்தின் மீது பதித்து பின் இரு கரங்ககளில் சங்கு, சக்கரம் விளங்கவும் முன்கரங்கள் அபய, வரத முத்திரைகளோடு அருளாட்சி செய்கிறார். இங்குள்ள துர்க்கை வீரமகள் வெற்றியின் சின்னமாக திண்டுக்கல் மக்களின் மனதில் இடம் பெற்றுள்ளார். இவர் மீது நம்பிக்கை கொண்டு பக்தி செய்கிறார்களோ அவர்கள் இகபர சுகங்களை அடைவது திண்ணம். சக்தி கொண்ட துர்கை, வேதாத்திரி நகரில் அமைக்க வேண்டும் என இக்கோயில் அறங்காவலர்கள் முடிவு செய்தனர். இதற்காக மகாபலிபுரத்தில் 6 அடி உயர துர்கை அம்மன் சிலை வடிவமைக்கப்பட்டது. இந்தியாவின் முக்கிய ஸ்தலங்களில் இருந்து தீர்த்தம் கொண்டுவரப்பட்டது.
