Akshata Mantra

अक्षत मन्त्र
Also known as: Sacred Rice Mantra, Wedding Rice, Blessed Grains

About

The Akshata Mantra is a sacred invocation chanted over unbroken rice grains (akshata) during Hindu weddings and all auspicious ceremonies. The term 'akshata' literally means 'unbroken' or 'undivided,' symbolizing wholeness, fertility, and prosperity. The mantra is deeply rooted in the Grihya Sutras, particularly the Ashvalayana Grihya Sutra and Paraskara Grihya Sutra, which prescribe the use of akshata in the vivaha (wedding) rites. The rice grains are typically mixed with turmeric and kumkum, representing the blessings of the goddesses Lakshmi and Annapurna. According to the Devi Mahatmya, rice is considered a symbol of abundance and nourishment, and its offering invokes divine grace for a prosperous married life. The beej-akshara 'Shreem' (श्रीं) is often associated with this mantra, as it is the seed syllable of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and fertility. The phoneme 'Shreem' resonates with the energy of abundance and auspiciousness. The traditional purpose of the Akshata Mantra is to bless the couple with fertility, prosperity, and lifelong harmony. It is chanted while applying the rice on the foreheads and heads of the bride and groom, or showering them with the grains. The recommended chanting context is during the wedding ceremony, specifically in the 'Akshata Arpana' ritual, where the priest and family members chant the mantra while offering the rice. The count is typically one round of 108 repetitions or as per the specific ritual instructions. The mantra is also used in other auspicious occasions like housewarming (griha pravesh) and pujas. No specific cautions are associated with this mantra, but it is traditionally advised to use whole, unbroken grains to maintain the symbolic purity. The Akshata Mantra thus serves as a powerful invocation for divine blessings, ensuring a fruitful and harmonious union.
