Ayurveda Samhita Dhyana Mantra

आयुर्वेद संहिता ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Ayurveda Samhita, Charaka, Sushruta

About

The Ayurveda Samhita Dhyana Mantra is a contemplative invocation used by students and practitioners of Ayurveda to align the mind with the wisdom contained in the three great compendiums: the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya. These texts, foundational to Ayurvedic medicine, are traditionally attributed to the sages Charaka, Sushruta, and Vagbhata respectively. The mantra is chanted to invoke the blessings of Dhanvantari, the divine physician, and the ancient sages for clarity, retention, and deep understanding of the healing sciences. According to the Charaka Samhita (Sutrasthana 1.1), the study of Ayurveda begins with reverence to the creator and the sages, and this dhyana mantra serves as a meditative prelude to study. The mantra often includes the beej-aksharas 'Om' and the names of the sages, such as 'Om Charakaya Namah' or 'Om Sushrutaya Namah', which are believed to resonate with the subtle energies of the respective samhitas. The phonetics of these syllables are said to activate the intellect (buddhi) and memory (smriti), as described in the Mantra Mahodadhi (Chapter 2) regarding the power of name-based mantras. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to remove obstacles in learning, enhance concentration, and invoke the grace of the lineage of Ayurvedic masters. It is recommended to be chanted daily before studying the samhitas, preferably in the morning after bathing, facing east, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha or tulsi mala. The ideal ritual setting includes a clean space, a small image or yantra of Dhanvantari, and offerings of fresh flowers and incense. Cautions include avoiding chanting during impure states or without proper pronunciation, as the mantra is considered a direct link to the ancient wisdom. The Ashtanga Hridaya (Uttarasthana 40.1) emphasizes the importance of reverence to the scriptures, and this dhyana mantra embodies that principle. By meditating on the samhitas through this mantra, the practitioner aligns with the timeless knowledge of Ayurveda, fostering both intellectual mastery and spiritual healing.
