Brihaspati Mantra

बृहस्पति मन्त्र
Also known as: Guru Mantra, Jupiter Mantra, Wisdom Planet Mantra

About

The Brihaspati Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to Brihaspati (Guru), the divine preceptor of the gods and the planetary ruler of Jupiter. According to the Brihaspati Purana, Brihaspati is the embodiment of wisdom, eloquence, and righteous counsel. The mantra is primarily chanted for career success, professional advancement, wisdom in decision-making, and recognition in one's field. It is particularly beneficial for teachers, advisors, and leaders who seek clarity and guidance in their roles. Textually, the most common form of the Brihaspati Mantra is "Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah," which appears in tantric compilations such as the Mantra Mahodadhi. The bija syllables "graam," "greem," and "graum" are derived from the root "gur" (to invoke or praise) and are believed to activate the energy of Jupiter. The phoneme "gr" is associated with the guru principle, while the vowel modifications (a, i, au) correspond to creation, sustenance, and dissolution, respectively. Another widely used mantra is "Om Brihaspataye Namah," a simple name mantra found in Puranic texts. The Brihaspati Gayatri, as recorded in the Rigveda (10.90), is also chanted: "Om Brihaspataye Vidmahe, Devacharyaya Dhimahi, Tanno Guru Prachodayat." Traditional purposes include enhancing intellect, removing obstacles in education and career, and attracting divine blessings for prosperity and fame. The mantra is believed to pacify the malefic effects of a weak Jupiter in one's horoscope, as described in Jyotisha texts. Recommended chanting context: ideally on Thursdays (Guruvar), during the bright fortnight, at sunrise or noon, facing east. The count is typically 108 repetitions using a yellow sandalwood or crystal mala. Ritual setting includes a clean space with yellow flowers, turmeric, and a picture of Brihaspati seated on an elephant. Cautions: the mantra should not be chanted mechanically; devotion and correct pronunciation are essential. It is advised to avoid chanting during eclipses or while impure. The mantra is pan-India and is especially revered during Guru Purnima.
