Hayagriva Mantra

हयग्रीव मन्त्र
Also known as: Hayagriva Gayatri, Wisdom Horse Mantra, Vidya Prapti Mantra

About

The Hayagriva Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to Lord Hayagriva, the horse-headed incarnation of Vishnu who recovered the Vedas from the demons Madhu and Kaitabha. According to the Hayagriva Upanishad (verse 1), Hayagriva is the embodiment of supreme knowledge (jnana) and is worshiped for the removal of ignorance and the attainment of wisdom. The mantra is traditionally chanted by students, scholars, and seekers of knowledge to enhance memory, concentration, and intellectual prowess. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) 'Hreem' (ह्रीं) is central to this mantra, representing the sound of creation and the energy of the heart chakra, which governs learning and compassion. The Hayagriva Gayatri, found in the Vaishnava Agamas, is a specific form: 'Om Vakratundaya Vidmahe Hayagrivaya Dhimahi Tanno Danti Prachodayat' (though variations exist). The primary mantra 'Om Shreem Hreem Hayagrivaya Namah' combines the bijas 'Shreem' (prosperity) and 'Hreem' (wisdom) to invoke both material and spiritual knowledge. The Devi Mahatmya (Chapter 1) references Hayagriva as the slayer of Madhu and Kaitabha, linking him to the restoration of cosmic order through knowledge. Chanting this mantra is believed to bestow academic success, research excellence, and mastery over any subject. Traditional practice recommends recitation 108 times daily, preferably at dawn or during study sessions, facing east or north. The mantra is also chanted during Hayagriva Jayanti and Vasant Panchami for enhanced benefits. No specific cautions are mentioned in scriptures, but as with all mantras, purity of mind and intention is advised. The Lalita Sahasranama (verse 272) also eulogizes Hayagriva as the bestower of knowledge, affirming his role in the Shakta tradition. This mantra is especially revered in South India, where temples dedicated to Hayagriva, such as the one at Tiruvahindrapuram, attract scholars for blessings in learning.
