Guru Raksha Mantra

गुरु रक्षा मन्त्र
Also known as: Guru's Shield, Master's Grace, Spiritual Protection
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Guru Raksha Mantra is a protective invocation seeking the grace and shielding of the spiritual master (guru). Its textual origin is primarily found in the Guru Gita (verses 76–79), a scripture from the Skanda Purana that extols the guru as the supreme reality. The mantra is also referenced in various Tantras, such as the Rudrayamala Tantra, where the guru is identified with the ultimate principle of protection. The mantra typically includes the beej-akshara 'Om' and phrases like 'Guru Raksham Kuru' or 'Guru Gayatri', which invoke the guru's protective energy.

Phonetically, the repetition of 'ra' (र) in 'Raksha' signifies fire and energy, while 'ksha' (क्ष) represents the union of ksha (क्ष) as a seed syllable for protection. The deity associated is the Guru or Parampara (lineage), considered the embodiment of divine grace. According to the Guru Gita, chanting this mantra removes obstacles, grants spiritual guidance, and bestows the guru's blessings. Traditional purposes include protection from negative influences, both internal (doubts, laziness) and external (adverse circumstances), and ensuring steady progress on the spiritual path.

Recommended chanting context: ideally at dawn or dusk, facing east or towards the guru's image, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha mala. The Guru Gita suggests chanting on Guru Purnima for amplified benefits. Cautions: the mantra should be received from a qualified guru; chanting without proper initiation may yield limited results. It is considered safe for all sincere seekers, but respect and devotion are essential.

The mantra is widely worshiped across India and globally, especially during Guru Purnima festivals.
