Lokapala Stotra Mantra

लोकपाल स्तोत्र मन्त्र
Also known as: Lokapala Stotra, World Guardians, Directional Hymn
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Lokapala Stotra Mantra is a hymn venerating the Lokapalas, the eight directional guardians who protect the universe. According to the Puranas, such as the Vishnu Purana (Book 2, Chapter 8), the Lokapalas are Indra (east), Agni (southeast), Yama (south), Nirriti (southwest), Varuna (west), Vayu (northwest), Kubera (north), and Ishana (northeast). The stotra invokes these deities to safeguard the world and all beings. The Agamas, particularly the Shaiva and Vaishnava Agamas, prescribe this stotra for rituals seeking universal protection.

The mantra is often chanted as a stotra (praise hymn) rather than a single beej mantra, though it may incorporate bijaksharas like 'Om' and 'Hum' for emphasis. The phonetics of the stotra are designed to resonate with the directional energies, aligning the chanter with the protective forces of the cosmos. Traditional purposes include warding off negative influences, ensuring safety during travel, and blessing one's home or community. It is commonly recited during protective rituals, temple ceremonies, and at the start of any important undertaking.

The recommended chanting context is during the morning or evening twilight, facing the respective direction of each guardian, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha or crystal mala. Cautions: This stotra should be chanted with reverence and proper pronunciation, as errors may diminish its efficacy. It is not recommended for those with malicious intent, as the guardians are said to turn their protection away from such individuals. The stotra is found in various Puranic and Agamic texts, and its recitation is believed to create a shield of divine energy around the practitioner and the environment.
