Mangala Gauri Vrat Mantra

मङ्गल गौरी व्रत मन्त्र
Also known as: Tuesday Fast Mantra, Mangala Gauri Puja, Soubhagya Vrat
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Mangala Gauri Vrat Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to Goddess Mangala Gauri, an auspicious form of Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. This vrata (vow) and its accompanying mantras are primarily observed by married Hindu women in regions such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, especially on Tuesdays during the month of Shravana (July–August). The textual origin of this vrata is found in the Skanda Purana, which narrates the story of a devoted queen who performed this fast to secure the longevity and well-being of her husband. The Mangala Gauri Vrat Katha, a traditional narrative recited during the ritual, elaborates on the benefits and procedures. The primary mantra, "Om Mangala Gaurai Namah," is a simple yet powerful beej-akshara (seed syllable) mantra.

The term "Mangala" signifies auspiciousness and is also associated with the planet Mars (Mangala), while "Gauri" refers to the fair-complexioned goddess. Phonetically, the mantra combines the primordial sound "Om" with the name of the deity, invoking her protective and benevolent energy. The purpose of this mantra is to ensure marital harmony, husband's longevity (soubhagya), family happiness, and overall prosperity. Traditionally, the mantra is chanted 108 times during the puja, which includes offerings of sindoor (vermilion), mangalsutra (sacred necklace), and other symbols of married life. The recommended time for chanting is Tuesday mornings after a ritual bath, facing east, and in a clean, sanctified space.

According to the Mantra Mahodadhi, such vrata mantras should be recited with full faith and without interruption to achieve the desired fruits. Cautions include maintaining purity of body and mind, avoiding anger or negative thoughts during the chanting, and observing the fast with sincerity. The mantra is not recommended for unmarried women or men, as it is specifically intended for the well-being of married couples. The Mangala Gauri Vrat is also associated with the Lalita Sahasranama, which praises the goddess as the bestower of marital bliss. Thus, this mantra serves as a powerful tool for invoking divine grace for a harmonious married life.
