Preta Nivarana Mantra

प्रेत निवारण मन्त्र
Also known as: Spirit Removal Mantra, Ghost Protection, Bhoota Vidya

About

The Preta Nivarana Mantra belongs to the class of apotropaic mantras aimed at warding off pretas (restless spirits), bhutas (ghosts), and other malevolent entities. Its textual origins are found in the Atharvaveda (e.g., hymns such as AV 8.6 and AV 19.9) which contain incantations for protection against evil spirits and sorcery. Later Tantric compilations, such as the Mantra Mahodadhi (Chapter 12 on Bhuta-Shuddhi), systematized these mantras with specific bija-aksharas (seed syllables) like 'Hum' and 'Phat' that are believed to neutralize negative energies. The mantra is associated with multiple deities: Agni (the purifying fire god), Rudra (the fierce form of Shiva who destroys evil), Narasimha (the man-lion avatar of Vishnu who protects devotees), and Durga (the goddess who slays demons). Each deity's aspect is invoked depending on the context—Agni for cleansing spaces, Rudra for severing attachments, Narasimha for fearless protection, and Durga for overall victory over negativity. The beej-akshara 'Phat' (फट्) is a weapon-syllable that cuts through etheric cords, while 'Hum' (हूँ) is a shield that repels entities. According to the Shaktisangama Tantra, the mantra should be recited with a kavacha (armor) visualization, imagining a protective circle of fire. Traditional purposes include removing spirit attachments, cleansing haunted houses, and protecting individuals during vulnerable times such as after death rituals or during Pitru Paksha (the fortnight of ancestors). Recommended chanting context: recite 108 times daily, preferably at sunrise or sunset, facing east or south. For space cleansing, the mantra is chanted while circumambulating the area with a ghee lamp or camphor flame. Rudraksha beads (especially 5-faced) and Tulsi wood are used as supportive tools. Cautions: these mantras should not be chanted without proper guidance, as they can disturb subtle energies if misused. They are best performed after a purification bath and with a focused, fearless mind. The Atharvaveda warns that such mantras must be recited with correct intonation to avoid adverse effects. In summary, the Preta Nivarana Mantra is a powerful protective tool rooted in Vedic and Tantric traditions, offering both immediate and long-term spiritual security.
