Raksha Kavacha Stotra

रक्षा कवच स्तोत्र
Also known as: Raksha Kavacha, Protective Armor, Universal Shield

About

The Raksha Kavacha Stotra is a powerful hymn of protection found in various Puranas and Tantras, most notably in the Rudrayamala Tantra and the Skanda Purana. It is a kavacha (armor) stotra, a genre of mantra-shastra that invokes divine energies to envelop the chanter in an impenetrable shield. The stotra typically consists of a series of verses that assign protective deities to different parts of the body, such as the head, throat, arms, and torso, often beginning with the beej mantra 'Om' and incorporating bijaksharas like 'Hrim', 'Klim', and 'Hum' to seal the armor. According to the Rudrayamala Tantra, the Raksha Kavacha is associated with Lord Shiva as the ultimate protector, though variations dedicated to Vishnu, Devi, or Hanuman also exist. The phoneme structure of the stotra emphasizes plosive and guttural sounds (ka, kha, ga, gha) that are believed to create a vibratory barrier against negative forces. Traditional purposes include warding off physical dangers, evil spirits, black magic, and planetary afflictions, as well as ensuring success in endeavors and safe travel. The Devi Mahatmya (Chapter 11) describes a similar kavacha for the Goddess, highlighting the efficacy of such hymns in granting immunity from harm. Recommended chanting context is during the brahma muhurta (pre-dawn) or at twilight, facing east or north, after performing achamana (sipping water) and sankalpa (resolve). The count is typically 108 times for 40 days, or as part of a daily sadhana. Ritual setting includes a clean, quiet space with a lamp and incense; the stotra may be recited on paper or copper plate and worn as a talisman. Cautions: The Raksha Kavacha should not be chanted without proper initiation (diksha) from a guru, as incorrect pronunciation or intention may lead to adverse effects. It is also advised to avoid chanting during impurity (e.g., menstruation, mourning) unless in emergency. The stotra's power is said to increase when combined with nyasa (ritual placement of mantras on the body) and visualization of a radiant armor surrounding the chanter.
