Rohini Nakshatra Mantra

रोहिणी नक्षत्र मन्त्र
Also known as: Rohini Star, Moon's Favorite, Taurus Star
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Rohini Nakshatra Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to Rohini, the fourth lunar mansion (nakshatra) in Vedic astrology, ruled by the Moon and presided over by the creator deity Brahma or Prajapati. According to the Brihat Samhita (chapter on nakshatras), Rohini is considered the most beloved star of the Moon, symbolizing fertility, growth, and marital bliss. The mantra is primarily chanted for marital happiness, conception, and the nurturing of creative endeavors. Its beej-akshara (seed syllable) is derived from the nakshatra's energy, often associated with the syllable 'Om' or 'Rohinyai', which aligns with the lunar and creative vibrations.

The Mantra Mahodadhi (a key text on mantra-shastra) describes Rohini as a bestower of abundance and love, linking it to the deity Prajapati, the lord of progeny. The traditional purpose includes removing obstacles in marriage, enhancing fertility, and fostering harmonious relationships. Chanting is recommended during the Rohini nakshatra period (approximately 13 hours 20 minutes each month) or on Mondays, especially in the morning after bathing, with a count of 108 repetitions using a crystal or pearl rosary. The Devi Mahatmya also references Rohini as a form of the divine mother, emphasizing her role in creation and nourishment.

Cautions include avoiding chanting during eclipses or when the Moon is afflicted in one's horoscope, as per Jyotisha texts. The mantra is often recited before marriage ceremonies or during Rohini Vrat, a fasting observed for marital harmony. Its phonetics, with the rolling 'r' and open 'o', are said to stimulate the sacral chakra, promoting emotional balance and creativity. This mantra is pan-Indian, with special reverence in South India, where it is included in nakshatra pujas for couples seeking progeny.
