The Shanivar Vrat Mantra is a sacred invocation chanted during the observance of the Saturday fast (Shanivar Upavasa) dedicated to Lord Shani (Saturn). According to the Shani Purana, this vrata is observed to appease Shani and mitigate the malefic effects of his planetary influence, particularly for those experiencing the Sade Sati or Dhaiya periods. The primary mantra, 'Om Shanaye Namah', is a simple yet powerful beej mantra that salutes Shani, invoking his blessings for patience, discipline, and protection. The Shani Gayatri, 'Om Sham Shanaye Namah', is also chanted, as prescribed in Jyotisha texts, to harmonize Saturn's energy. The phoneme 'Sham' (शं) is the beejakshara for Shani, representing the element of air and the quality of endurance. Traditionally, the mantra is recited 108 times on Saturdays, preferably in the morning after a bath, facing south, with offerings of black sesame seeds, mustard oil, and blue flowers. The fast involves abstaining from grains and consuming only fruits or milk. The purpose is to seek relief from obstacles, delays, and hardships caused by Shani's transit, as well as to cultivate humility and perseverance. The Devi Mahatmya also references the importance of planetary worship for overall well-being. Caution is advised: the mantra should not be chanted with malice or to harm others, as Shani is the dispenser of karma. It is recommended to chant with devotion and a pure heart, ideally under the guidance of a guru. The Shanivar Vrat Mantra is thus a means to align oneself with cosmic justice and earn Shani's grace for a balanced life.
