The Shravana Mantra is a sacred sound formula dedicated to the healing and protection of the ears, drawing from the ancient traditions of Ayurveda and mantra-shastra. The term 'Shravana' (श्रवण) in Sanskrit means 'hearing' or 'the act of listening,' and this mantra is specifically chanted to promote auditory health, alleviate ear disorders, and enhance clarity of hearing. According to the Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita (Sutrasthana 1.42-45), sound therapy and mantra recitation are considered effective means to balance the Vata dosha, which governs the auditory system and is often implicated in ear ailments. The mantra is associated with the deities Vayu (the god of air), Akasha (the ether element), and Saraswati (the goddess of knowledge and sound), reflecting the elemental and divine forces that govern hearing. Vayu represents the movement of sound waves, Akasha provides the medium for sound, and Saraswati bestows wisdom and clarity of perception. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) 'Shra' (श्र) is central to the mantra; it is believed to resonate with the subtle energy of the ears and stimulate the auditory nerves. Phonetically, the 'Sh' sound is produced by the tongue touching the roof of the mouth, creating vibrations that are said to activate the brain's auditory centers. The traditional purpose of the Shravana Mantra includes relief from conditions such as tinnitus, hearing loss, ear infections, and excessive earwax. It is also chanted for protection against negative sounds and for spiritual listening (shravana) in the context of scriptural study. Recommended chanting context: ideally recited 108 times daily, preferably at sunrise or sunset, facing east. The practitioner should sit in a quiet space, focus on the ears, and visualize healing light entering the ears. Some traditions recommend chanting with the right hand placed over the right ear and then the left ear. Cautions: those with acute ear infections should seek medical treatment alongside mantra practice. The mantra should not be chanted in polluted or noisy environments. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi (Chapter 7), mantras for the ears are best chanted during the Shravana nakshatra (lunar mansion) for amplified effect. The Shravana Gayatri, a related mantra, is also found in the Rigveda (10.90.9) in the context of the cosmic sound. This mantra is a powerful tool for holistic ear care, combining sound vibration with divine intention.
