Shukra, also known as Venus, is the preceptor of the asuras (demons) and one of the nine planetary deities (Navagraha) in Hindu astrology. His textual origins are found in the Rigveda (1.35.9) where he is invoked as the shining one, and more extensively in the Shukra Purana, a scripture dedicated to his lore. In Jyotisha texts such as the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Shukra is described as the ruler of love, beauty, luxury, relationships, and creativity. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) for Shukra is 'Draam' (द्रां), which is composed of 'Da' (earth element), 'Ra' (fire), and 'Aa' (vowel), with the nasalization (bindu) representing the cosmic sound. This mantra, 'Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah', is traditionally chanted to invoke Shukra's blessings for marital harmony, material comforts, artistic success, and longevity. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi (a classic text on mantra shastra), the Shukra mantra should be recited 108 times daily, preferably on Fridays (Shukra's day) during the bright fortnight, facing north or east. The recommended ritual setting includes wearing white clothes, using a white rosary (sphatik or pearl), and offering white flowers, sandalwood paste, and sweets. The purpose of this mantra is to pacify malefic Shukra in one's horoscope, enhance creativity, attract love, and gain wealth. Cautions: This mantra should not be chanted during eclipse periods or when one is impure; it is advised to maintain celibacy on the day of chanting. The Shukra mantra is also used in Vedic rituals for longevity (Ayushya homa) as per the Shukra Purana. Tradition holds that regular chanting with devotion can remove obstacles in relationships and bestow a harmonious family life. The deity is associated with the white color, diamond, silver, and lotus, symbolizing purity and opulence. Shukra's iconography depicts him with a white complexion, four arms holding a mace, lotus, rosary, and kamandalu, riding a crocodile or white elephant. His consort is Urjashwini. The Shukra mantra is a powerful tool for those seeking refinement in arts, prosperity, and marital bliss.
