The Shukravar Vrat Mantra is chanted during the Friday fast dedicated to Shukra (Venus), the guru of the asuras and the bestower of beauty, love, luxury, and marital harmony. This observance is widely described in Puranic and Jyotisha texts, such as the Skanda Purana and the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, which prescribe Friday fasting to propitiate Shukra for a happy married life and material prosperity. The primary mantra, "Om Shukraya Namah," is a simple namah-mantra that salutes Shukra as the deity of the planet Venus. The Shukra Gayatri, "Om Bhruguputraya Vidmahe Divyadehadharaya Dhimahi Tanno Shukrah Prachodayat," is also chanted; it invokes Shukra as the son of Bhrigu and the one with a divine body, seeking illumination of the intellect. The beej-akshara for Shukra is "Dram" (ड्रां), which is often prefixed to mantras for enhanced potency. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi, the bija "Dram" represents the fire element and the power of attraction. The traditional purpose of this vrat is to remove obstacles in love and marriage, enhance physical beauty, and bring financial comfort. It is believed that regular chanting on Fridays, especially during Shukra Hora (the planetary hour of Venus), aligns the devotee with the benefic energies of Shukra. The recommended chanting count is 108 times per session, using a crystal or white sandalwood rosary. Ritual setting includes a white cloth, offerings of white flowers (jasmine, lotus), sweets, and a lamp with ghee. Fasting from sunrise to sunset is typical, with a single meal of satvik food after the puja. Cautions: Those with a weak or afflicted Shukra in their birth chart should chant with devotion but avoid excessive materialistic desires. Pregnant women and those mourning are traditionally advised to observe a simpler fast without full ritual. The Shukravar Vrat is especially observed during the month of Magha (January–February) and on Fridays in the waxing moon phase for maximum benefit.
Lord Shukra (Venus), the Friday fast for love and harmony.
