Somvar Vrat Mantra

सोमवार व्रत मन्त्र
Also known as: Monday Fast, Shiva Vrat, Somvar Upavasa
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Somvar Vrat Mantra is central to the observance of the Monday fast (Somvar Vrat), a practice deeply rooted in Hindu tradition and dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to the Shiva Purana, the Monday fast is especially meritorious during the month of Shravana, and the chanting of this mantra is believed to invoke the blessings of the divine couple for marital harmony, progeny, and the fulfillment of desires. The Skanda Purana also extols the virtues of this vrata, stating that it removes obstacles and bestows prosperity.

The mantra itself often incorporates the sacred syllable 'Om' and the Panchakshari mantra 'Om Namah Shivaya', which is considered the beej mantra of Lord Shiva. The phoneme 'Om' represents the primordial sound and the universe, while 'Namah' signifies surrender, and 'Shivaya' invokes the auspicious one. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to seek the grace of Shiva and Parvati for a harmonious married life, as Monday is associated with the moon (Soma), which governs emotions and relationships.

The recommended chanting context includes rising early on Monday, taking a bath, wearing clean clothes, and observing a fast from sunrise to sunset. The mantra is typically chanted 108 times using a rudraksha mala, preferably in front of a Shiva linga or an image of Shiva and Parvati. Offerings of white flowers, bilva leaves, and milk are customary.

Cautions include maintaining purity of mind and body, avoiding anger or negative thoughts during the vrata, and breaking the fast only after sunset with a simple meal. The Somvar Vrat Mantra is thus a powerful tool for spiritual and domestic well-being, as affirmed by the Puranas.
