Tantra Raksha Mantra

तन्त्र रक्षा मन्त्र
Also known as: Tantric Shield, Esoteric Protection, Mystical Protection
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Tantra Raksha Mantra is a class of protective incantations used within Tantric traditions to safeguard the practitioner, the ritual space, and the continuity of the lineage. These mantras are not attributed to a single deity but are associated with various Tantric deities such as Bhairava, Chinnamasta, or Matangi, depending on the specific tradition. The term 'Raksha' (रक्षा) means 'protection' or 'shield', and these mantras function as a kavacha (armor) against negative energies, obstacles, and malevolent forces that may disrupt Tantric sādhanā.

Textually, Tantra Raksha Mantras are found in numerous Tantric scriptures, including the 'Mantra Mahodadhi' (Chapter on Kavacha) and the 'Shaktisangama Tantra' (Section on Raksha Vidhi). The 'Mantra Mahodadhi' describes the construction of protective mantras using bija syllables such as 'Hrīm' (ह्रीं) and 'Kṣrīm' (क्ष्रीं), which are associated with the goddess and the fierce aspects of Shiva. The phoneme 'Hrīm' is considered a seed syllable of the goddess Tripura Sundari and is believed to activate the protective energy of the mantra. According to the 'Shaktisangama Tantra', the repetition of these mantras creates a subtle shield around the practitioner, preventing psychic attacks and ensuring ritual success.

The traditional purpose of the Tantra Raksha Mantra is multifaceted: it protects the practitioner during intense meditative practices, purifies the sacred space, and preserves the purity of the lineage teachings. It is often chanted at the beginning of Tantric rituals to establish a protective boundary, sometimes visualized as a circle of fire or a mandala. The recommended chanting count is typically 108 times per session, preferably during the early morning or at twilight (sandhyā). Some texts prescribe a specific number of repetitions over several days for a lasting effect. Cautions include the need for proper initiation (dīkṣā) from a qualified guru, as misuse of these mantras can lead to adverse karmic consequences. Additionally, the practitioner should maintain a pure diet and mental focus to avoid attracting negative forces. The Tantra Raksha Mantra is thus an essential tool for any serious Tantric practitioner, ensuring safety and efficacy in the pursuit of spiritual goals.
