Tantra Yantra Raksha Mantra

तन्त्र यन्त्र रक्षा मन्त्र
Also known as: Tantric Yantra, Geometric Protection, Shield of Power
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Tantra Yantra Raksha Mantra is a class of protective incantations used to empower yantras—geometric diagrams considered to be physical manifestations of deities. These mantras are drawn from the vast corpus of Tantric literature, particularly texts such as the *Mantra Mahodadhi* and the *Shaktisangama Tantra*, which detail the construction, consecration, and activation of yantras for specific purposes. The term 'raksha' (protection) indicates that these mantras are primarily employed to create a protective field, shielding the practitioner, their dwelling, or a sacred space from negative influences, malevolent spirits, and psychic attacks.

Each yantra is associated with a particular deity, and the corresponding mantra invokes that deity's energy. For example, the Shri Yantra is linked to the goddess Lalita Tripurasundari, while the Maha Mrityunjaya Yantra is associated with Shiva. The beej-aksharas (seed syllables) used in these mantras, such as 'Om', 'Hrim', 'Klim', and 'Gam', are considered to be condensed forms of divine power. Phonetically, these syllables are believed to resonate with specific energy centers (chakras) in the body, aligning the practitioner's vibration with the yantra's geometry.

According to the *Mantra Mahodadhi* (Chapter 7), the chanting of yantra raksha mantras should be performed with precise pronunciation and visualization. The recommended count is typically 108 repetitions per session, using a rudraksha or sphatika mala. The ideal time is during brahma muhurta (pre-dawn) or on auspicious days like full moon or new moon. The ritual setting involves placing the yantra on a clean altar, offering incense and lamp, and mentally tracing the yantra's lines while chanting.

Traditionally, these mantras are believed to confer protection from accidents, theft, black magic, and evil eye. They also purify and energize the environment, making them suitable for consecrating homes, temples, and meditation spaces. However, caution is advised: Tantric practices require proper initiation (diksha) from a qualified guru, as incorrect usage may lead to adverse effects. The *Shaktisangama Tantra* warns that yantras without proper mantra activation are inert and may attract negative forces if mishandled. Therefore, these mantras should be chanted with reverence and understanding, ideally under guidance.
