Tribal Healing Mantra

आदिवासी हीलिङ्ग मन्त्र
Also known as: Adivasi Healing, Folk Medicine Mantras, Bhuta Vidya

About

The Tribal Healing Mantra represents a vast corpus of oral traditions preserved by indigenous communities across India, such as the Bhil, Gond, Santhal, and Munda. These mantras are not found in classical Sanskrit texts but are transmitted through generations of shamans and village healers (bhagats or ojhas). They are often chanted in local dialects, incorporating names of local deities, ancestral spirits, and nature forces. According to the oral traditions of the Bhil tribe, these mantras invoke the power of the earth goddess (Dharti Mata) and forest spirits (Vanadevatas) for curing ailments. The Atharva Veda (e.g., Atharva Veda 2.3.1-6) contains hymns for healing and exorcism that share thematic parallels with tribal practices, though the specific mantras differ. The beej-aksharas in these mantras often include sounds like 'Hoom', 'Phat', and 'Kshraum', which are believed to activate healing energies. Traditional purposes include curing fevers, snake bites, mental disturbances, and protection from evil spirits (bhuta-preta). Chanting is typically done during specific phases of the moon, often at dawn or dusk, with offerings of rice, turmeric, and neem leaves. The count varies; some traditions prescribe 108 repetitions for acute conditions, while others require continuous chanting for hours. Ritual settings involve a sacred grove (sarnasthal) or a designated healing space with a fire altar. Cautions: These mantras are considered powerful and should ideally be received through initiation from a qualified healer; improper use may lead to spiritual imbalance. The Mantra Mahodadhi (a later compendium) mentions similar folk practices under the section on bhuta-vidya, but the tribal mantras remain largely undocumented in written scriptures.
