Universal Gratitude Kritajna Mantra

कृतज्ञता मन्त्र
Also known as: Kritajna, Gratitude, Thankfulness
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Universal Gratitude Kritajna Mantra is a sacred invocation centered on the concept of kritajna (gratitude). While not traced to a single textual source, the principle of gratitude is deeply embedded in Hindu dharma. The Rigveda (10.117.6) declares, "The one who eats alone is a sinner; the one who shares with others is blessed," emphasizing thankfulness for sustenance. The Taittiriya Upanishad (3.10.5) teaches, "Matru devo bhava, pitru devo bhava" (revere mother, father, and teacher as gods), fostering gratitude toward all beings.

The mantra itself often comprises bija syllables such as "Kreem" (seed of action) and "Hreem" (seed of divine grace), invoking the universal energy of thankfulness. The phoneme "Krit" suggests accomplishment, while "Jna" denotes knowledge, together meaning "awareness of what has been done"—a state of recognizing blessings. Traditional purposes include cultivating humility, attracting abundance, and healing emotional wounds. The Devi Mahatmya (Chapter 11) extols the goddess as the bestower of all boons, and gratitude is considered the highest form of devotion.

The Lalita Sahasranama (verse 27) praises the goddess as "Kritajna" (the grateful one), indicating that gratitude aligns one with the divine. Chanting this mantra is recommended during sunrise or sunset, with a minimum of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha or crystal mala. It can be recited before meals or as a daily practice to transform the mind. No specific cautions are noted, but sincerity and a focused heart are essential.

The mantra is universal, requiring no initiation, and is suitable for all seekers. Its healing power lies in dissolving resentment and fostering contentment, as echoed in the Bhagavad Gita (2.47): "You have a right to perform your prescribed duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions." This detachment coupled with gratitude leads to inner peace.
