The Vajikarana Mantra is a sacred utterance rooted in the ancient Ayurvedic tradition of Vajikarana, a specialized branch dedicated to rejuvenation of the reproductive system, enhancement of virility, and promotion of fertility. The term 'Vajikarana' literally means 'making a horse' (vāji = horse, karaṇa = making), signifying the goal of bestowing the vigor and stamina of a stallion. These mantras are primarily associated with the deities Dhanvantari, the divine physician and an avatar of Vishnu, and the Ashwini Kumaras, the twin horsemen gods of Ayurveda and healing. According to the Charaka Samhita (Chikitsasthana 2.4.1), Vajikarana therapies are prescribed to improve the quality of semen, enhance sexual vitality, and ensure healthy progeny. The mantras often incorporate bija (seed) syllables such as 'Om' and 'Hrim', which are believed to activate the reproductive energy centers in the subtle body. For instance, 'Om Vajikaranaya Namah' is a direct salutation to the principle of virility, while 'Om Balam Dehi Swaha' is an invocation for strength and vitality. The Mantra Mahodadhi (Chapter 10) discusses the use of such mantras in conjunction with herbal preparations to amplify their effects. Traditional purposes include treatment of infertility, improvement of libido, and overall rejuvenation of the reproductive system. Chanting is recommended during the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) in the morning, after a bath, facing east, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rosary of crystal or lotus seeds. Some texts advise performing a homa (fire ritual) with ghee and specific herbs like Ashwagandha and Shatavari. Cautions include avoiding these mantras during periods of illness or without proper guidance, as they are considered potent and may disturb the doshas if misused. The Vajikarana Shastra, a subset of the Kama Shastra, also references these mantras in the context of marital harmony and procreation. Thus, the Vajikarana Mantra serves as a spiritual tool to align the practitioner with the divine forces of health and fertility.
