Varuna Mantra

वरुण मन्त्र
Also known as: Water God Mantra, Ocean Lord, Guardian of West
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Varuna Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to Varuna, the Vedic deity of waters, oceans, and the cosmic order (ṛta). Varuna is one of the oldest gods in the Rigveda, where over 80 hymns are addressed to him (e.g., Rigveda 1.25, 7.86). He is described as the all-seeing lord who upholds the moral law, punishes sin, and releases from bondage. The mantra is chanted for protection during travel over water, purification from sin, release from karmic bonds, and to invoke divine justice.

The primary beej-akshara associated with Varuna is 'Vam' (वं), representing the water element (apas) and the Varuna tattva. The mantra 'Om Varunaya Namah' is a simple salutation, while the Varuna Gayatri—'Om Jalanidhaye Vidmahe, Varunaya Dhimahi, Tanno Varunah Prachodayat'—is a more elaborate form found in later tantric texts like the Mantra Mahodadhi. According to the Devi Mahatmya (Chapter 11), Varuna is also a guardian of the western direction (dikpala). Chanting is traditionally recommended at dawn or dusk, facing west, near a body of water, or during water rituals.

The count is typically 108 repetitions using a rudraksha or crystal mala. Benefits include purification of negative karma, protection from drowning or water-related accidents, and alignment with cosmic justice. Cautions: The mantra should be chanted with reverence and not for malicious purposes, as Varuna is a stern enforcer of truth. According to the Mahabharata (Shanti Parva), Varuna's noose (pasha) symbolizes the binding of sinners; thus, the mantra is also used in prayashchitta (atonement) rites.

The Puranas, such as the Matsya Purana, describe Varuna's abode in the ocean and his role in granting boons to devotees. This mantra is especially revered in coastal regions of India, where Varuna Puja is performed during full moon nights or before sea voyages.
