The Vastu Purusha Mantra is a sacred invocation directed to Vastu Purusha, the presiding deity of site, building, and sacred architecture in Hindu tradition. The textual origin of this mantra is found in the Vastu Shastra texts, particularly the Mayamata and Manasara, which are foundational treatises on architecture and spatial harmony. The deity Vastu Purusha is described in the Puranas, such as the Matsya Purana, where he is said to have been born from the sweat of Lord Shiva and later subdued by the gods to become the spirit of the building site. The mantra is typically chanted during the Griha Pravesh (housewarming) ceremony and Vastu Puja to invoke the deity's blessings for protection and harmony. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) 'Om' is often prefixed, as in 'Om Vastu Purushaya Namah', which establishes a connection with the universal consciousness. The phoneme 'Vastu' relates to dwelling, 'Purusha' to the cosmic being, and 'Namah' signifies salutation. According to the Vastu Shastra tradition, chanting this mantra aligns the building with cosmic energies, ensuring prosperity, health, and peace for the inhabitants. The recommended chanting context is during the laying of the foundation, at the threshold of a new home, or during Vastu dosha rectification. The ideal count is 108 repetitions, preferably in the morning or evening, facing the northeast direction. The ritual setting includes a clean space, a small altar with a Vastu Purusha mandala or a picture, and offerings of flowers, incense, and water. Cautions include maintaining purity of body and mind, avoiding chanting during eclipses or inauspicious times, and ensuring the mantra is not chanted with negative intent. The Vastu Purusha is iconographically depicted lying prone on the ground, covering the entire site, with his head in the northeast and feet in the southwest, as described in the Vastu Shastra texts. This mantra is also associated with the Vastu Gayatri, which is a more elaborate form found in the Agamas. The purpose of the mantra extends beyond physical protection to spiritual alignment, as it harmonizes the five elements (Pancha Mahabhuta) within the dwelling, as per the principles of Vastu Shastra.
