Ajna Chakra Dhyana Mantra

आज्ञा चक्र ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Third Eye, Command Center, Ajna

About

The Ajna Chakra Dhyana Mantra is a meditative invocation focused on the third eye energy center, located between the eyebrows. Its primary beej (seed) syllable is OM (ॐ), which according to the Mandukya Upanishad (verse 1) encompasses all states of consciousness and is the sound of the ultimate reality. The mantra is used to awaken and balance the Ajna Chakra, which is described in the Shat-Chakra-Nirupana (verse 32) as a two-petaled lotus, white in color, with the bija mantra OM on its petals. This chakra is the seat of the mind (manas) and higher intellect (buddhi), and its awakening is said to grant direct perception beyond the senses. The deity associated with Ajna is Ardhanarishvara (Shiva-Shakti united), representing the integration of masculine and feminine energies. According to the Yoga-Kundalini Upanishad (verse 1.78), meditation on this chakra leads to the destruction of past karma and the attainment of siddhis (psychic powers). The mantra is traditionally chanted in a quiet, clean space, preferably during Brahma Muhurta (pre-dawn hours), with the eyes closed and focus on the space between the eyebrows. A recommended count is 108 repetitions per session, using a rudraksha or crystal mala. The purpose of this dhyana is to cultivate intuition, insight, wisdom, and clarity of thought, as well as to prepare the practitioner for higher states of consciousness. Caution is advised: without proper grounding practices (such as asana or pranayama), excessive focus on Ajna can lead to mental imbalance or headaches. The mantra is found in various tantric and yogic texts, including the Gheranda Samhita (chapter 5, verse 76) which details the visualization of the chakra. It is chanted for spiritual growth and self-realization, and is considered a gateway to the crown chakra (Sahasrara).
