Tripura Sundari Mantra

त्रिपुर सुन्दरी मन्त्र
Also known as: Shodashi Mantra, Lalita Mantra, Rajarajeshwari Mantra, Kameshwari Mantra
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Tripura Sundari Mantra is the primary mantra of the goddess Tripura Sundari, the third of the ten Mahavidyas and the central deity of the Sri Vidya tradition. She is revered as the embodiment of supreme beauty, love, and cosmic consciousness. The name 'Tripura Sundari' means 'the most beautiful one in the three worlds' (Tripura refers to the three cities or realms of consciousness). The mantra is also known as the Shodashi Mantra, as it consists of sixteen syllables (Panchadashi with an additional seed syllable). The textual origin of this mantra is found in the Tripura Upanishad (verses 1-15), which expounds the esoteric meaning of the Panchadashi mantra.

The Lalita Sahasranama (a thousand names of Lalita) from the Brahmanda Purana extensively glorifies her attributes and is chanted as a stotra in the Sri Vidya tradition. The beej-aksharas (seed syllables) in the mantra—'Hreem', 'Shreem', and 'Kleem'—each have specific phonemic significance: 'Hreem' represents the sound of transformation and the goddess's creative energy; 'Shreem' denotes prosperity and abundance; 'Kleem' signifies attraction and divine love. Together, they invoke the goddess's threefold power of will (iccha), knowledge (jnana), and action (kriya). The traditional purpose of chanting this mantra is to attain spiritual enlightenment, material prosperity, and the fulfillment of desires. It is believed to purify the mind, bestow beauty and charisma, and lead the practitioner toward liberation (moksha).

According to the Mantra Mahodadhi (a tantric compendium), the recommended chanting context includes reciting the mantra 108 times daily, preferably during sunrise or sunset, facing east or north. The ideal count for japa is 100,000 repetitions (purascharana) for siddhi. Ritual setting involves sitting on a deer or kusha grass seat, wearing red or white clothing, and using a rudraksha or sphatika mala. The Sri Chakra (Sri Yantra) is the primary yantra for worship, and offerings of red flowers, sandalwood paste, and sweet substances are made. Cautions: This mantra should be chanted with proper initiation (diksha) from a qualified guru, as it is considered a powerful tantric mantra.

Without guidance, improper recitation may lead to spiritual imbalance. It is not recommended for those with impure intentions or without prior purification practices.
