Bhuvaneshwari Mantra

भुवनेश्वरी मन्त्र
Also known as: Bhuvaneshvari Mantra, Queen of the Universe, Space Goddess Mantra

About

The Bhuvaneshwari Mantra is the sacred invocation of Bhuvaneshwari, the fourth of the ten Mahavidyas in the Shakta Tantric tradition. Her name means 'Queen of the Worlds' or 'She whose domain is the universe,' signifying her sovereignty over all realms of existence. The primary mantra, 'Om Hreem Bhuvaneshwaryai Namah,' centers on the beej-akshara 'Hreem,' which is the seed syllable of the goddess. According to the 'Mantra Mahodadhi' (a key Tantric compendium), 'Hreem' represents the union of Shiva (Ha) and Shakti (Reem), embodying the creative vibration that manifests the cosmos. The 'Bhuvaneshwari Tantra' describes her as the space in which all elements, worlds, and beings arise and dissolve. Chanting this mantra is traditionally held to expand one's consciousness to embrace the cosmic order, granting abundance, sovereignty, and a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of all things. The 'Devi Bhagavata Purana' (Book 7) extols Bhuvaneshwari as the supreme goddess who weaves the fabric of time and space, and her mantra is recommended for those seeking material prosperity, spiritual expansion, and liberation from the illusion of separateness. The mantra is often chanted 108 times daily, preferably at dawn or during the bright fortnight of the lunar month, facing east. It is also used in elaborate pujas during Navaratri, especially in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, where the goddess is worshiped with offerings of white flowers and camphor. Practitioners should approach this mantra with reverence and purity, as it activates powerful cosmic energies. The 'Lalita Sahasranama' (verse 142) indirectly honors her as 'Bhuvaneshwari' in the context of the supreme goddess. No specific cautions are prescribed beyond the general Tantric advice to receive initiation (diksha) from a qualified guru before undertaking prolonged japa of beej mantras. The mantra's vibrations align the chanter with the expansive, nurturing, and all-encompassing nature of the cosmos itself.
