Asana Dhyana Mantra (Comprehensive)

आसन ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Posture Meditation, Yoga Asanas, Seat Practice
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Asana Dhyana Mantra refers to a category of meditative verses used to invoke stability, ease, and alignment in yoga postures. While specific mantra texts vary across traditions, the foundational concept is rooted in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (2.46), which defines asana as 'sthira sukham asanam'—a posture that is steady and comfortable. This aphorism is often chanted as a dhyana mantra to internalize the qualities of steadiness and ease. In the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (1.17), the importance of asana is emphasized as the first limb of hatha yoga, preparing the body for pranayama and meditation.

The mantra 'Om Asana' or 'Om Sthira Sukham Asanam' is commonly recited before practice to align the mind with the posture. The beej-akshara 'Om' (ॐ) is central, representing the primordial vibration that connects the practitioner to the universal consciousness. Phonetically, 'Om' comprises the sounds A, U, and M, symbolizing creation, preservation, and dissolution, which correspond to the three stages of asana practice: entering, holding, and releasing. Traditional purposes include stabilizing the body, calming the mind, and preventing injuries.

Benefits are said to include enhanced concentration, physical endurance, and spiritual readiness for deeper meditation. Recommended chanting context: at the beginning of a yoga session, seated in the chosen asana, with eyes closed, chanting 3, 11, or 108 times. The ideal time is sunrise or before meditation. Cautions: the mantra should not be chanted mechanically; the practitioner must focus on the posture's alignment and breath.

According to the Gheranda Samhita (5.1-2), asana practice should be performed with devotion and awareness, avoiding force or haste. The mantra is suitable for all levels, but those with physical limitations should adapt postures under guidance.
