Badarayana Mantra

बादरायण मन्त्र
Also known as: Badarayana, Author of Brahma Sutras, Vedanta Sage
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Badarayana Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to Sage Badarayana, traditionally identified with Veda Vyasa, the compiler of the Vedas and author of the Brahma Sutras. According to the Brahma Sutras (1.1.1), the text begins with the inquiry into Brahman: 'Athato Brahma Jijnasa,' establishing the foundation of Vedanta philosophy. The mantra is primarily chanted to gain profound understanding of the nature of Brahman, the ultimate reality, and to receive the blessings of the sage who systematized Vedantic thought. The beej-akshara 'Om' at the start of the mantra (as in 'Om Badarayanaya Namah') represents the primordial sound from which all creation emanates, as described in the Mandukya Upanishad (verse 1).

The name 'Badarayana' itself is derived from 'badari' (the jujube tree), indicating the sage's hermitage in Badarikashrama, a sacred site mentioned in the Mahabharata (Vanaparva). The traditional purpose of this mantra is to sharpen the intellect for scriptural study, remove doubts regarding the nature of the Self, and cultivate devotion to the guru-parampara. It is recommended to chant the mantra 108 times daily, preferably in the morning after bathing, facing east, and seated on a kusha grass mat. The ideal ritual setting includes a clean altar with an image or yantra of Vyasa, and offerings of white flowers, sandalwood paste, and incense.

Chanting during the Brahma Muhurta (approximately 4:00–6:00 AM) is considered especially beneficial. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi (Chapter 7), mantras of sages (rishi-mantras) should be chanted with clear pronunciation and focused intention. Cautions: This mantra should not be chanted casually or without proper reverence; it is intended for sincere seekers of Vedantic knowledge. Those with a materialistic mindset may not experience its full benefits.

Additionally, it is advised to receive the mantra from a qualified guru, as the Brahma Sutras themselves emphasize the importance of guru-upadesha (instruction from a teacher) in the pursuit of Brahman-knowledge.
