Bhairava Yamala Mantra

भैरव यामल मन्त्र
Also known as: Bhairava Yamala, Bhairava-Bhairavi, Tantric Text
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Bhairava Yamala Mantra is a powerful Tantric invocation derived from the Bhairava Yamala Tantra, a foundational text of the Yamala class of scriptures. This Tantra is presented as a dialogue between Bhairava (a fierce form of Shiva) and Bhairavi (his consort, a form of Shakti), embodying the principle of yamala—the inseparable union of the divine masculine and feminine. The mantra is primarily chanted for the attainment of Tantric wisdom (jñana), the realization of the fierce union of Bhairava and Bhairavi, and the acquisition of various siddhis (supernatural powers). According to the Tantrasara, the Bhairava Yamala is considered a key text for understanding the esoteric practices of the Kaula tradition.

The mantra often incorporates the beej-akshara (seed syllable) 'Hrim' or 'Kshraum', which are associated with Bhairava and Bhairavi respectively, and are believed to activate the fierce energies of the deities. Phonetically, the mantra's sounds are designed to resonate with the subtle energy channels (nadis) and awaken the kundalini. Traditional purposes include protection from malevolent forces, removal of obstacles in spiritual practice, and the destruction of ignorance. The recommended chanting context is during the night, particularly on new moon days (amavasya), in a secluded space, with a specific count of 108 or 1008 repetitions using a rudraksha mala.

Ritual setting often involves a yantra of Bhairava and Bhairavi, offerings of red flowers, and the use of bhasma (sacred ash). Cautions are emphasized: this mantra should only be chanted under the guidance of a qualified guru, as its fierce energy can be destabilizing without proper purification and initiation. It is not recommended for those with impure intentions or without prior Tantric sadhana. The Bhairava Yamala Tantra itself warns that misuse leads to severe consequences.

Thus, the mantra is a potent tool for advanced practitioners seeking to merge with the fierce, transformative power of the divine couple.
