Bhairava Yogini Mantra

भैरव योगिनी मन्त्र
Also known as: Bhairava Yogini Union, Fierce Divine Couple, Tantric Union

About

The Bhairava Yogini Mantra is a profound Tantric invocation that embodies the inseparable union of Bhairava (the fierce form of Shiva) and Yogini (the dynamic aspect of Shakti). This mantra is primarily found in the Bhairava Tantras and Yogini texts, which are part of the larger corpus of Kashmiri Shaiva and Shakta Tantric literature. The Bhairava Tantras, such as the Svacchanda Bhairava Tantra and the Bhairava Yamala, describe Bhairava as the supreme consciousness who, together with his consort Yogini, represents the non-dual reality of Shiva-Shakti. The Yogini texts, including the Yogini Tantra and the Kubjika Tantra, elaborate on the sixty-four Yoginis as manifestations of the goddess and their union with Bhairava. The mantra itself is a beej-akshara (seed syllable) mantra, often structured as 'Om Bhairava Yogini Namah' or variations thereof. The phoneme 'Bhai' is associated with the root 'bhī' (fear), indicating the terrifying aspect that destroys ignorance, while 'rava' means sound or roar, symbolizing the primal vibration. 'Yogini' derives from 'yuj' (to unite), signifying the feminine power of yoga and union. The mantra is chanted for liberation (moksha) and supreme realization, as it harmonizes the dualities of consciousness (Shiva) and energy (Shakti). According to the Mantra Mahodadhi, such union mantras are chanted to attain siddhis (spiritual powers) and ultimately kaivalya (absolute independence). The traditional purpose includes dissolving the ego, transcending duality, and experiencing the bliss of non-dual awareness. Recommended chanting context: ideally at midnight or in a solitary place like a cremation ground (shmashana), as per Tantric practice, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha mala. The ritual setting often involves a yantra of Bhairava and Yogini, offerings of red flowers, and incense. Cautions: This mantra is considered powerful and should be chanted only under the guidance of a qualified guru, as it can awaken intense energies. It is not recommended for those with unstable minds or without proper initiation. The mantra is central to Tantric rituals and is worshiped by advanced practitioners seeking the ultimate union.
