Bhairavi Dhyana Mantra (Kashmir Shaivism)

भैरवी ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Bhairavi, Fierce Goddess, Supreme Energy

About

Dhyana mantras for Bhairavi, the fierce goddess and consort of Bhairava in Kashmir Shaivism, are meditative invocations that focus the mind on her form and attributes. These mantras are primarily found in the Bhairavi Tantra and related Kashmir Shaiva texts such as the Tantrasadbhava and the Netra Tantra. Bhairavi is the dynamic, terrifying aspect of Shakti, representing the raw, untamed energy of consciousness that destroys ignorance and limitations. The dhyana mantra typically describes her appearance: dark-complexioned, adorned with a garland of skulls, holding a trident and a severed head, and seated on a corpse, symbolizing the transcendence of death and ego. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) associated with Bhairavi is 'Hreem' (ह्रीं), which combines the fire of transformation (Ha), the creative energy (Ra), the illusion-destroying power (Ee), and the resonance of the universe (M). This bija is often prefixed to the dhyana mantra to invoke her presence. The purpose of chanting this mantra is to awaken the fierce energy within the practitioner, enabling the transcendence of all dualities and limitations, and leading to the realization of the dynamic power of consciousness (Spanda) as described in the Shiva Sutras. Traditionally, the mantra is chanted during the night, especially on new moon days (Amavasya) or during Navaratri, with a minimum of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha mala. The recommended ritual setting includes a secluded space, preferably a cremation ground or a dark room, with offerings of red flowers, wine, and meat (symbolically or literally depending on the tradition). Cautions are necessary: this mantra should only be chanted under the guidance of a qualified guru, as its fierce energy can destabilize an unprepared mind. It is not recommended for those with weak mental constitution or without proper purification practices. The Bhairavi Dhyana Mantra is a powerful tool for advanced sadhakas seeking to confront and transcend their deepest fears and attachments, ultimately merging with the supreme consciousness that Bhairavi embodies.
