Bhairavi Yantra Mantra

भैरवी यन्त्र मन्त्र
Also known as: Bhairavi Yantra, Tripura Bhairavi Geometry, Shubhankari Yantra

About

The Bhairavi Yantra Mantra is a sacred sound formula used to activate and worship the geometric diagram (yantra) of Goddess Bhairavi, the fierce and transformative aspect of the Divine Mother. Bhairavi is the fifth of the ten Mahavidyas, representing the terrifying yet compassionate form of Shakti who destroys ignorance, grants fearlessness, and bestows spiritual power. The primary mantra associated with this yantra is "Om Hreem Bhairavyai Namah," where the seed syllable "Hreem" (ह्रीं) is a key beej-akshara in Shakta traditions, invoking the fiery energy of transformation and the union of Shiva and Shakti. According to the Bhairavi Tantra, this mantra and yantra are employed for overcoming obstacles, removing fear, and attaining siddhis (supernatural powers). The yantra itself is a complex geometric design, often consisting of interlocking triangles and circles, symbolizing the dynamic play of cosmic forces. The Mantra Mahodadhi (a classic text on mantra-shastra) describes Bhairavi as the goddess who grants boons to devotees who meditate on her yantra with the prescribed mantra, especially during the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) or at midnight. Traditional purposes include protection from enemies, curing diseases, and accelerating spiritual evolution. The recommended chanting count is 108 repetitions per session, ideally performed on a red or black rosary (rudraksha or crystal). Ritual setting involves a clean, secluded space, with offerings of red flowers, incense, and lamp. Cautions: This mantra is considered powerful and should not be chanted without proper initiation (diksha) from a qualified guru, as it can amplify both positive and negative tendencies. The Devi Mahatmya (Chapter 11) alludes to Bhairavi's fierce grace that destroys the ego, and the Lalita Sahasranama mentions her as "Bhairavi" who is both terrible and auspicious. Practitioners are advised to maintain purity of body and mind, and to avoid chanting during impure states or without focus. The yantra is often drawn on copper or Bhojpatra (birch bark) and energized through the mantra for meditation and worship.
