Bhuprithvi Yantra Mantra

भूपृथ्वी यन्त्र मन्त्र
Also known as: Bhuprithvi, Earth Square, Outer Enclosure

About

The Bhuprithvi Yantra Mantra is associated with the outermost square enclosure of the Sri Yantra and other yantras, symbolizing the earth element (Prithvi). This mantra is primarily used for grounding, protection, and establishing the foundational energy of the yantra. According to the 'Mantra Mahodadhi' (a key tantric text), the Bhuprithvi is the first layer of the yantra, representing the physical world and the stability of the earth. The mantra 'Om Prithvyai Namah' is a common beej mantra for the earth goddess Prithvi, where 'Prithvyai' is the dative form of Prithvi, meaning 'to the earth'. The phoneme 'Prith' is derived from the root 'prath', meaning to spread or expand, indicating the all-pervading nature of the earth element. The 'Bhu Suktam' from the Rigveda (Rigveda 10.90) also praises the earth as the foundation of all existence. Traditionally, this mantra is chanted to invoke the protective and stabilizing energies of the earth, making it essential for yantra worship and meditation. The recommended chanting context includes early morning or during the practice of bhumi puja (earth worship). The count is typically 108 repetitions using a rudraksha or crystal mala. Ritual setting involves drawing or placing the yantra on a clean surface, offering flowers, incense, and water, and chanting the mantra while focusing on the outer square. Cautions include avoiding chanting during eclipses or in impure places, as the mantra is considered highly potent for grounding and should be treated with respect. The Bhuprithvi Yantra Mantra is also mentioned in the 'Shaktisangama Tantra' as a means to purify the site and create a protective barrier. It is chanted before proceeding to inner yantra layers, ensuring the practitioner is firmly rooted in the material world before ascending to higher spiritual realms.
