Matangi Mantra

मातङ्गी मन्त्र
Also known as: Ucchishta Matangi Mantra, Raja Matangi, Tantric Saraswati

About

The Matangi Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to Matangi, the ninth of the ten Mahavidyas in Tantric Hinduism. According to the 'Tantrasara', Matangi is the goddess of inner wisdom, speech, music, and the arts, often regarded as the Tantric counterpart of Saraswati. Her association with ucchishta (ritually leftover food) is unique; the 'Ucchishta Tantra' describes her as the presiding deity of the left-over offerings, symbolizing the acceptance of the impure and the transformation of the mundane into the sacred. The primary beej-aksharas in her mantra—'Hreem', 'Kleem', and 'Hoom'—represent the energies of creation, preservation, and dissolution, respectively. 'Hreem' is the bija of Maya (illusion), 'Kleem' attracts and fulfills desires, and 'Hoom' dispels negativity. The mantra 'Om Hreem Kleem Hoom Matangyai Namah' is chanted for mastery over speech, creative inspiration, and social influence. The 'Matangi Tantra' states that regular recitation bestows eloquence, poetic talent, and the ability to persuade others. It is also used to gain control over enemies and to attract wealth and fame. Traditionally, the mantra is chanted 108 times daily, preferably at dawn or midnight, facing north or east. Practitioners often use a crystal or lotus seed mala. Due to Matangi's association with ucchishta, some traditions recommend chanting after meals or in a state of ritual impurity, but this should only be done under proper guru guidance. The 'Shaktisangama Tantra' warns that without initiation, the mantra may cause imbalance. Matangi Gayatri and Ucchishta Matangi Mantra are also popular forms. Her worship is especially prevalent in South India and among Sri Vidya practitioners. Festivals like Matangi Jayanti and Navaratri are dedicated to her. The goddess is depicted with dark or emerald complexion, holding a veena, parrot, and skull bowl, seated on a throne. Her iconography emphasizes the synthesis of wisdom and the unconventional.
