Bindu Mantra

बिन्दु मन्त्र
Also known as: Bindu Dhyana, Point of Origin, Seed of Creation
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Bindu Mantra is a profound tantric mantra that focuses on the bindu, the dimensionless point of creation at the center of yantras. In the tradition of mantra-shastra, the bindu represents the condensed unity of Shiva and Shakti, the unmanifest source from which all manifestation arises. According to the *Mantra Mahodadhi* (a key tantric text), the bindu is the essential seed (bija) of all mantras, often represented as a dot in yantras and as the anusvara (ṃ) in Sanskrit phonetics. The *Shaktisangama Tantra* describes the bindu as the primordial point where the dynamic energy of Shakti and the static consciousness of Shiva merge, giving rise to the entire cosmos.

The mantra itself, often chanted as 'Om Bindu Namah' or simply as the bindu syllable, is used for deep concentration and spiritual realization. The phoneme 'bindu' (or the anusvara) is considered a subtle vibration that resonates with the creative potential of the universe. Traditionally, this mantra is chanted to attain unity consciousness, to dissolve duality, and to realize the point of origin within oneself. It is recommended to be chanted during meditation, especially in tantric rituals, at dawn or dusk, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha mala.

The practitioner should visualize a luminous point at the center of the heart or at the third eye. Cautions: This mantra is powerful and should be received from a qualified guru, as improper practice may lead to mental imbalance. It is not recommended for those without prior tantric initiation. The Bindu Mantra is central to many yantra texts and is worshiped across India by tantric practitioners for its ability to focus the mind and connect with the source of creation.
