Chandra Dhyana Mantra

चन्द्र ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Moon Meditation, Lunar Energy, Soma Upasana
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Chandra Dhyana Mantra is a meditative invocation dedicated to Chandra, the lunar deity in Hindu dharma. Chandra is revered as the source of cooling energy, mental peace, and emotional balance. The mantra is primarily used for calming the mind, soothing the emotions, and absorbing the nourishing, cooling rays of the moon. According to the *Chandra Purana* (Chapter 12), the moon is the presiding deity of the mind (manas), and regular meditation on Chandra harmonizes the mental and emotional faculties. The *Jyotisha texts*, such as the *Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra* (Chapter 2), associate Chandra with the element of water, the night, and the nurturing aspect of consciousness.

The beej-akshara (seed syllable) for Chandra is 'ॐ श्रां श्रीं श्रौं सः चन्द्रमसे नमः' (Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandramase Namah), where the 'श्र' (shra) sound is believed to activate the lunar energy within the practitioner. The mantra is often chanted with a focus on the moon's calming white light, visualizing it flowing through the crown chakra and filling the entire being with serenity. Traditional purposes include relief from mental stress, anxiety, insomnia, and emotional turbulence. It is also used to enhance intuition, creativity, and receptivity. The recommended chanting context is on Mondays (Somavar), the day ruled by Chandra, and especially during the full moon (Purnima) or the Sharad Purnima festival, when the moon is at its most beneficent.

The ideal time is during the evening or night, facing the moon. A typical practice involves chanting 108 times using a crystal or white sandalwood mala. According to the *Mantra Mahodadhi* (Chapter 7), the Chandra Dhyana Mantra should be chanted with a pure mind and body, after a bath and wearing white clothes. Cautions include avoiding chanting during lunar eclipses or when the moon is in a debilitated sign (like Scorpio) without proper guidance. The mantra is considered safe for general practice but should be approached with reverence and consistency for best results.
