Dashakshari Mantra

दशाक्षरी मन्त्र
Also known as: Ten-syllable, Ramakrishna Mantra, Devi Dashakshari
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Dashakshari (ten-syllable) mantra is a class of sacred formulas found across Vedic and Tantric traditions, each associated with a specific deity. The most prominent is the Rama Dashakshari, which according to the Adhyatma Ramayana (a part of the Brahmanda Purana) consists of the ten syllables: 'Om Ram Ramaya Namah'. This mantra is said to embody the essence of Lord Rama, invoking his protective and compassionate nature. Another well-known form is the Devi Dashakshari, detailed in the Tantrasara and the Mantra Mahodadhi, which typically runs: 'Om Aim Hrim Klim Chamundaye Vichche'.

This ten-syllable mantra is addressed to Goddess Chamunda, a fierce aspect of Devi, and is chanted for victory over enemies and removal of obstacles. The beej-aksharas (seed syllables) 'Aim', 'Hrim', 'Klim' are central to many Tantric mantras, representing the creative, destructive, and preservative energies of the Goddess. The phoneme structure of these mantras is carefully prescribed: each syllable has a specific resonance that aligns with subtle energy centers (chakras) in the body. Traditional purposes include spiritual liberation (moksha), material prosperity, and protection from negative forces.

The Rama Dashakshari is often chanted during Rama Navami and daily japa, with a count of 108 or 1008 repetitions, preferably in the morning after bathing. The Devi Dashakshari is recommended during Navaratri, especially at midnight, with offerings of red flowers and incense. Cautions: These mantras should be received from a qualified guru, as improper pronunciation or lack of initiation may lead to adverse effects. The Mantra-Yoga-Samhita warns that the Devi Dashakshari should not be chanted without proper purification and mental focus.

Overall, the Dashakshari mantras are considered powerful tools for connecting with the deity's essence, offering comprehensive blessings to the sincere practitioner.
