Dhumavati Yantra Mantra

धूमावती यन्त्र मन्त्र
Also known as: Dhumavati Yantra, Smoke Yantra, Widow Goddess Geometry

About

The Dhumavati Yantra Mantra is a sacred sound formula used to invoke the energy of the goddess Dhumavati, the seventh of the ten Mahavidyas. Dhumavati is described in the Shaktisangama Tantra as the widow goddess who embodies the smoke that remains after all desires are burnt away. Her yantra, a geometric diagram composed of intersecting triangles and lotus petals, is detailed in the Dhumavati Tantra, where it is said to represent the void (shunya) and the transformative power of dissolution. The primary mantra associated with this yantra is "Om Dhumavatyai Namah," a simple yet potent invocation. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) "Dhum" is derived from the Sanskrit root "dhu" meaning to shake or agitate, and is linked to the goddess's nature as one who disrupts illusions. According to the Mantra Mahodadhi, chanting this mantra with focus on the yantra helps the practitioner transcend worldly attachments, cultivate inner strength, and attain liberation (moksha). The yantra itself is traditionally drawn on a metal plate or cloth, with the mantra inscribed around its perimeter. The recommended chanting count is 108 repetitions daily, preferably during the twilight hours or on the eighth lunar day of the waning moon (Krishna Ashtami), which is associated with Dhumavati. Ritual setting includes offering black sesame seeds, smoke from a funeral pyre (or incense), and wearing dark or torn clothing. Cautions: This mantra and yantra are considered highly tamasic and are meant for advanced sadhakas who have conquered fear and desire. It is advised to perform the practice under the guidance of a qualified guru, as improper invocation may lead to mental disturbance or loss of vitality. The Devi Mahatmya does not directly mention Dhumavati, but her fierce form is alluded to in the context of the goddess's destructive aspects. The Lalita Sahasranama also omits her, as she belongs to the left-handed tantric tradition. Nonetheless, for those seeking radical detachment and spiritual fearlessness, the Dhumavati Yantra Mantra remains a profound tool.
