Gautama Mantra

गौतम मन्त्र
Also known as: Gautama, Author of Nyaya Sutras, Logic Sage
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Gautama Mantra is a sacred invocation dedicated to Sage Gautama, the legendary founder of the Nyaya school of logic and philosophy. According to the Nyaya Sutras, Gautama (also known as Akshapada) systematized the principles of reasoning, epistemology, and debate. This mantra is traditionally chanted to invoke the sage's blessings for intellectual clarity, logical reasoning, and success in scholarly pursuits. The core mantra, 'Om Gautamaya Namah,' is a simple yet powerful salutation that aligns the practitioner with the sage's energy.

The beej-akshara 'Gam' (गं) is often added as a seed syllable, representing the essence of Gautama's wisdom. In mantra-shastra, the phoneme 'Ga' is associated with the throat chakra (Vishuddhi), which governs communication and truth, while 'Au' invokes the divine light of knowledge. The mantra is recommended for students of logic, philosophy, and law, as well as for those seeking mental clarity in decision-making. Traditional texts such as the Mantra Mahodadhi and the Shaktisangama Tantra mention that mantras of sages like Gautama are best chanted during the Brahma Muhurta (pre-dawn hours) or on days associated with Jupiter (Thursday), as Jupiter represents wisdom.

A minimum of 108 repetitions (one mala) is prescribed, using a crystal or tulsi bead mala. The practitioner should sit facing east or north, preferably in a clean, quiet space. Some traditions recommend chanting the mantra 11,000 times over a period of 40 days for profound intellectual benefits. Cautions: This mantra is considered sattvic and safe for all, but it should be chanted with reverence and not for manipulative purposes.

The Nyaya Sutras themselves emphasize ethical reasoning, so the mantra's power is best harnessed for righteous and truthful ends.
