Guru Parampara Mantra

गुरु परम्परा मन्त्र
Also known as: Lineage Mantra, Guru Lineage, Parampara Blessings

About

The Guru Parampara Mantra is a sacred invocation that honors the unbroken chain of spiritual teachers (guru-parampara) through whom divine wisdom has been transmitted. According to the Guru Gita (verse 76), the guru is Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshvara; the guru is the supreme Brahman itself. This mantra is chanted to invoke the blessings of all gurus in the lineage, from the primordial teacher down to one's own living guru. The parampara concept is central to many Hindu traditions, especially in Tantra and Vedanta, where the transmission of mantra-diksha (initiation) and shaktipata (descent of grace) occurs through the lineage. The Mantra Mahodadhi (chapter 1) emphasizes that without the grace of the guru-parampara, mantra-sadhana remains fruitless. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) often included in such mantras is 'Gum' (गुं), which represents the guru principle and is associated with the planet Jupiter (Brihaspati) in astrological contexts. Phonetically, 'Gum' combines the guttural 'Ga' with the nasal 'M', stimulating the Vishuddhi chakra and enhancing receptivity to spiritual guidance. The traditional purpose of this mantra is to purify the disciple's mind, remove obstacles in sadhana, and ensure the uninterrupted flow of grace from the lineage. It is chanted for spiritual guidance, protection from negative influences, and the successful continuation of the tradition. Recommended chanting context includes daily practice at dawn or dusk, especially on Guru Purnima (the full moon day in July-August) and on Thursdays. The ideal count is 108 repetitions (one mala) using a crystal or rudraksha mala. Ritual setting involves sitting facing east or north, with a picture or yantra of the guru lineage, and offering flowers, incense, and a lamp. Cautions: This mantra should ideally be received from a qualified guru; chanting without proper initiation may not yield full benefits. Additionally, one should maintain purity of body and mind, and avoid chanting in unclean places or during periods of ritual impurity. The mantra is pan-Indian and revered across all spiritual traditions that honor the guru-shishya parampara.
