Hare Krishna Mahamantra

हरे कृष्ण महामन्त्र
Also known as: Maha Mantra, Hare Rama, Krishna Chant
§ 01
Origin & Tradition

About this mantra

The Hare Krishna Mahamantra is a sixteen-word Vedic mantra composed of three divine names: Hare, Krishna, and Rama. Its textual origin is the Kali Santarana Upanishad (verse 2), where it is declared the supreme means of deliverance in the Kali Yuga. The mantra is: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare. The Bhagavata Purana (6.3.31) also extols the chanting of the names of Krishna as the yuga-dharma for the current age. The term 'Hare' is the vocative form of Hara, a name of Radha or the energy of the Lord, while 'Krishna' means the all-attractive one, and 'Rama' refers to the supreme enjoyer or specifically Lord Ramachandra.

The mantra is a maha-mantra, or great chant, because it directly invokes the supreme personality of Godhead and his internal potency. According to the Kali Santarana Upanishad, chanting this mantra delivers one from the cycle of birth and death. The beej-akshara or seed syllables are implicit in the names themselves; 'Krishna' contains the bija 'Klim' which attracts the divine, and 'Rama' contains 'Ram' which bestows bliss. The traditional purpose is to cultivate prema-bhakti (pure love of God) and to attain liberation. It is chanted for the grace of Krishna and Rama, and is considered the most effective spiritual practice in the Kali Yuga.

Recommended chanting context: ideally chanted 108 times daily on a tulsi mala, especially in the early morning (brahma-muhurta) or during evening aarti. There are no strict cautions, as the mantra is universally beneficial; however, tradition holds that one should receive initiation from a bona fide guru to realize its full potency. The mantra is central to the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition and is propagated globally by ISKCON. It is chanted during festivals such as Krishna Janmashtami, Rama Navami, and Gaura Purnima. The mantra's simplicity and power make it accessible to all, regardless of caste or creed, as affirmed by the Kali Santarana Upanishad.
