Kali Krama Dhyana Mantra

काली क्रम ध्यान मन्त्र
Also known as: Kali Krama, Kali's Sequence, Kashmir Shaivism

About

The Kali Krama Dhyana Mantra belongs to the Kali Krama tradition, a sophisticated system of Tantric meditation originating in Kashmir Shaivism. This tradition is expounded in the Tantraloka of Abhinavagupta and the Kali Tantra, where Kali is revered as the supreme consciousness that unfolds the universe through a sequence of transformative stages. The mantra is a dhyana (meditation) formula used to contemplate the dynamic progression of Kali's forms, from the fierce and destructive to the blissful and liberating. The term 'Krama' means sequence or order, referring to the systematic unfolding of reality from the absolute (Anuttara) to the manifest world, and back again. According to the Tantraloka (Chapter 3), Kali Krama describes the goddess's activity in creation, preservation, and dissolution, with the practitioner internalizing this cosmic process. The beej-akshara (seed syllable) 'Krīm' is central to many Kali mantras; in the Kali Krama, it is often combined with visualizations of Kali's three forms: Kālasaṃkarṣiṇī (the destroyer of time), Kālarātri (the night of time), and Kālikā (the black goddess). The phoneme 'Krīm' is analyzed as 'K' representing the absolute, 'R' the dynamic energy, 'Ī' the creative power, and 'M' the dissolution, encapsulating the entire cycle. The traditional purpose of this dhyana mantra is to facilitate the practitioner's spiritual evolution through the stages of purification, transformation, and ultimate liberation (moksha). It is chanted for understanding the transformative power of Kali, which dissolves ego and ignorance, leading to the realization of non-dual consciousness. The recommended chanting context includes early morning or midnight, with a count of 108 repetitions using a rudraksha mala, in a secluded space. Ritual setting often involves a yantra of Kali Krama, offerings of red flowers, and incense. Cautions: This mantra is considered powerful and should be received from a qualified guru; improper practice may disturb the mind. It is not recommended for those without prior Tantric initiation or stable mental health.
